Radiowaves gets Plings
Posted on May 27th, 2010 No commentsHere at Radiowaves we’re very excited by this new development with Plings. Radiowaves is a safe social media network for schools and youth organisations. We provide a platform for young people to publish their videos and podcasts and connect safely with young people and organisations nationally. We’ve been working with the Plings team (and their api) so that all Plings events can now be delivered directly to pupils anywhere in the country through their Radiowaves page.
It’s a complex task made very simple. When pupils login they can quickly find events nearby, send an invite to their firends and easily find out who else wants to go. They also have the option to send themselves a free SMS reminder at a time of their choosing, just so they don’t forget, not that we know any teenagers who would. All this happens within the safe school’s learning environment on Radiowaves.
As well as getting all the practical information contained in the ‘Pling’ they can also give feedback on an event and see what others think through ‘Likes’ and comments. Both of these can be done before and after the event and will form a useful bank of information for the event organiser.
The system is currently being Beta tested at St Ambrose Barlow school in Salford, if you know a school or youth organisation that you think would like to be involved in this first release just direct them to www.radiowaves.co.uk/join and ask them to put ‘Plings‘ in promo code field on the sign up form.

Talking about positive activities. What are you hearing?
Posted on October 31st, 2008 1 commentAt yesterday’s launch of the Information and Signposting Project* at Channel 4 in London Tim Riches from Synergy TV talked about the importance of hearing about places to go and things to do direct from young people.
Through the RadioWaves project Tim’s team have been helping young people create their own media talking about positive activities – and you can find Plings NetCasts to listen to over here.
Tim played the following recording by Dan Barnes:
Tim pointed out the wealth of ideas and information Dan manages to share in this 10 minute podcast – pointing out how it highlights places to find information, challenges young people may face accessing activities, and issues with the way volunteering is promoted and marketed.
Have a listen… see what you take from the recording.
- What is the learning about positive activities that leaps out to you from Dan’s NetCast?
- How could PodCasts and audio be used in promoting and getting feedback on positive activities for young people?
*If you haven’t head, Substance, the organisation behind the Plings websites, are leading a consortium of organisations who, along with a talented team of partners, will build on the success of Plings by supporting 20 different local authorities to develop the ways they collect and share information about positive activities for young people. The Information and Signposting project is year long pilot funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Family. You can read more about it on the Substance website here, and we’ll be blogging more about it soon. -
Pling Ting Tings
Posted on June 30th, 2008 No commentsThe radiowaves team were at Glastonbury this weekend – have a look at their station, including an interview with The Ting Tings (which makes a nice title for a blog post!).
Plings also has a radiowaves station. We have not yet started to develop and publish content for it – but if you are interested – especially anyone in Manchester / Stockport – then drop us a line.

Now Recruiting: Campaign Managers
Posted on September 28th, 2007 No commentsPL!NGS has hooked up with Voice It! – a free, national web project giving young people something to shout about!
The project – which can be seen here – works along the lines of how we have talked about PL!NGback, in that it challenges young people to create websites, blogs and podcasts on what matters to them.
Providing a unique opportunity, it focuses on the issues YOU face via a website YOU run.
Right now, teenagers across the country are becoming ‘Campaign Managers’ – posting blogs, radio pieces and TV programmes on their very own web-pages.
Everyone from Children to MPs and the general public are being asked to join in by voting for (or against!) campaigns & providing valuable feedback – just like PL!Ngback!
Check out the site and let us know what you think.
P.S – Date for your diary…
